Trailer Towing Do’s and Don’ts

We have compiled a list of do’s and don’ts that you should keep in mind when using a trailer. You can find information on how to load a trailer safely, tips for on-road maintenance, as well as advice for long-haul journeys.

Correct and safe loading of the trailer:

  • Ensure that the load inside the trailer is balanced properly to avoid problems such as swaying on the road.
  • The centre of gravity should be towards the front of the trailer.
  • At least 60% of the load should be distributed over the front half of the trailer.
  • The contents of the load should be evenly distributed on both sides of the trailer.
  • Ensure that all cargo is secured to prevent the load from shifting.

On-road monitoring and maintenance:

  • When towing a trailer, it’s crucial to focus on managing the trailer.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Check the tire pressure.
  • Ensure that all lights and reflectors are functioning correctly.
  • Check that the load is still secure and has not moved.
  • Ensure all tie-down points are tight. Preparing for a long-haul journey with the trailer:
  • Check that you haven’t overloaded the trailer.
  • Ensure that all necessary components are in good working condition.
  • Keep in mind that overtaking is risky, especially with added weight and length.
  • When making a turn, remember to make a wider turn than usual.
